Ever wonder who invented the Frisbee?

In 1871, William Frisbie opened the Bridgeport Frisbie Pie Company. His homemade pies - sold in tins with his name stamped on the bottom - quickly became popular throughout Connecticut. A group of Yale students began using the lightweight pie tins in a game of catch, shouting “FRISBIE” as a warning as the tins sailed through the air.

In the 1950’s, Walter Frederick Morrison invented a plastic disc he named the “Flying Saucer,” which he sold to the new toy company Wham-O. The president of Wham-O, who had seen students tossing pie tins at Yale, changed the name to “Frisbee.” And the rest is history.

Who knew?
